{"id":43705,"date":"2025-10-14T15:12:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T13:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/export.ralphmoorman.nl\/?p=43705"},"modified":"2025-10-14T15:13:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T13:13:43","slug":"telogen-effluvium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/export.ralphmoorman.nl\/eng\/telogen-effluvium\/","title":{"rendered":"One form of hair loss is telogen effluvium"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\">As a health coach specialising in hormones and lifestyle, I have often dealt with the issue of hair loss. <!--more--><\/div>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\">All kinds of hair loss<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\">There are <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/haaruitval-bij-vrouwen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">all kinds of hair loss<\/a>\u00a0or 'alopecia'. These include male pattern baldness influenced by, among other things\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/mannelijke-hormonen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">male hormone<\/a>, which incidentally also occurs in women. There is also the areata form which\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/auto-immuunziekte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">autoimmune<\/a>\u00a0in nature. With these two 'hair-issues', nutrition and lifestyle have a complementary to medical role to play.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\">Telogen effluvium<\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\">Where my role as a health coach can be greater is in complaints of temporary diffuse hair loss, which with a difficult word <span class=\"\">&#8217;telogeen effluvium&#8217;<\/span>\u00a0is called.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"\">Telogen effluvium results from disruption of the hair cycle<\/span>, in which many hairs enter the telogen phase, or 'fall-out phase'. In some cases, this is acute due to a short-term trigger and then recovers quickly, but it can also be more chronic in nature.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\">\n<ul>\n<li>Acute telogen effluvium often results from\u00a0<span class=\"\">severe short-term stress<\/span>. In that case, normal growth may recover after a few months.<\/li>\n<li>When the cause is prolonged as in the case of some more chronic telogen effluvium, it may have arisen from a\u00a0<span class=\"\">nutrient deficiency, certain medication use or hormonal changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"\">The causes<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p><span class=\"\">A common hormonal cause is delayed thyroid function:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">If this is to be a\u00a0<span class=\"\">medical problem<\/span>\u00a0hair loss is going to be severe, but this is going to recover once thyroid medication is instituted.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Also, the\u00a0<span class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/schildklier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">thyroid function<\/a>\u00a0suboptimal<\/span>\u00a0be and the problem is not medical. This is when, for example, the conversion of inactive\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/t4-hormoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">T4<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/t3-hormoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">T3<\/a>\u00a0not quite right. This is a bit more about dormant hair loss, where the doctor says the thyroid is 'fine' and people end up with coaches like me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"\">Changes in sex hormones can also cause telogen effluvium:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">This is most common\u00a0<span class=\"\">in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/wat-is-het-verschil-tussen-de-menopauze-en-de-overgang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">transition years<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(often also when accompanied by a stressful period) and\u00a0<span class=\"\">after childbirth<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">But also starting with\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/hormoontherapeut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">bioidentical hormone replacement therapy<\/a> can temporarily put hair into a falling-out phase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>So in my practice, I see three causes of telogen effluvium most often:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Hormonal changes in the transition period<\/li>\n<li>Severe stress period<\/li>\n<li>Medical thyroid problems (and reduced conversion to the active thyroid hormone T3).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the latter case, the cause is often following too <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/export.ralphmoorman.nl\/eng\/crash-diet\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">strict diets<\/a>. As a result, the conversion of T4 to T3 goes on hold and the risk of deficiencies in nutrients the hair needs such as iron, b vitamins and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dehormoonfactor.nl\/eiwitten-eten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">proteins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I notice with clients who experience this that they sometimes end up in an almost panic state, as if things will never be right again.
